Let's kick off our series of "Boot Room Interviews", a chance for you all to get to know a little more about the players who make up FC7.
To begin with we have the one and only Jumbo, yes the Pele hater.
He started the regular footy kickaround back in 2019 and was the original reluctant hero.
An invaluable support pillar on and off the pitch.
First things first….Who do you support?
Easy… Manchester United all the way. Aka Man Utd, Red Devils, best team in the world … and the list goes on. I do have a soft spot for Chelsea (dad supports them) and West Ham for being my local team growing up. I also follow teams across Europe too and I just enjoy attacking football in general so teams like Barcelona, Real, Bayern & Dortmund always appeal.
When did you start playing?
As early as I can remember. My dad is a massive football fan and he would play football with me from a really young age. If I had to guess, I would say I was playing regularly from 5-6 years old, onwards.
SeanDoubleA & Jumbo discuss tactics......it didn't work, we were thrashed 18-6 vs Latimer Road Rovers in what's now known as the "Massacre of Westway"
What bit of advice would you give to someone just starting out footy?
I would probably say do some research, like everything else in the world just know what you’re getting into. It’s a great way to keep fit but it’s also one of the most enjoyable games as a hobby.
Because of the team nature of the sport, it’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and reunite with those you haven’t had the opportunity to spend time with previously as well as meet new people. There’s lots of great avenues to start playing thanks to technology.
Jumbo's been our top scorer at FC7, here he is pulling the trigger against Westway Warriors
Do you play for fun, fitness, competitiveness or all 3?
I think everyone starts playing it for fun, its such an enjoyable game and great way to socially interact with people too.
That’s how my story begun, as a kid just enjoying the beautiful game. I did get competitive as I grew up and started to compete with a team.
Kitted out, he's an over the knee sock fan
Right now, it’s a hybrid of fun and fitness for me because it provides me with a way to stay active and an opportunity of increasing my step count after a day at the office.
Turf trainers or Studs?
I would have to pick studs, they’re what I used most during my time playing football so I find them to be most comfortable.
Who are you most like in football, playing wise?
I would like to say I started off like Cristiano Ronaldo, I was always extremely fast and skilful as a winger however as I get older (and sadly less fit) my game has changed to a more central role with impeccable ball control and finishing ability.
My continued efforts in the gym to build muscle have made me lose some of my speed but my strength has improved so I would say I’m more like Zlatan Ibrahimović right at this moment.
Who is your favourite footballer and why?
That’s tough! Grrrr, there’s so many… Ronaldo (phenom), Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho …
Has anyone forgotten this wonder strike from Zizou, fear not, here it is again
If I was pressed to pick one player I would probably go with Zinedine Zidane. He was the best player in the world when I was growing up and not to mention that volley in the Champions League final…Unbelievable!
I thought he had the best touch in the game and the silky smooth skill he pulled of always had me on the edge of my seat.
He always made the game look effortless and he will forever go down as one of the best to ever do it.
Dream 7-a-side team? Name them
BEAT THAT!
