We have talked a lot about 2G, and our league aspirations before. But we've always maintained that we walk before we can run.
We started out in 2019, and we had basic aims. Get a weekly game going, up our overall membership and numbers each week. We achieved all this, and in the middle of a global pandemic, not bad eh. Don't get me wrong, it has been tough, people have got complacent and we're still challenging people's mindsets on a daily basis. Football is something we love, playing it is the dream of many....we have offered it to people, and there are some who still don't realise how lucky they are. Still, this is their problem, we can offer advice, but our primary focus has and will be the players who are grasping life by the horns.
Over time, we created a really relaxed and comfortable environment. A place where anyone could sign up and have a kickaround. We have had players who have never played footy before, players coming in from other sports and only recently we had our first female signup.
As our games have progressed we have got up to 8 signups, we think and know we can do better, but as time passed, we also began to realise that there was an appetite for a more competitive flavour of game. Thursdays, was to remain this bastion of fun and pure love for football, but there was a requirement to offer a more serious toned game for the hardcore ballers. We had setup and offered a great game on Thurs, for the players who just want fun, but it was only right that we made something available for the shouters, the guys who wanted a bit more bite and meaning to their weekly game.
BOOM! We setup what's now commonly known as 2G. Initially it was meant to be a situation where we got our best players together and see how they faired against 5 other randoms. We organised our first game which was a 25-17 victory, a match which we controlled, got complacent but ultimately saw out. There were definitely loads of positives, mainly that we could play against a bunch of randoms and win. We had been hapless during our Thursday matches when we played and it proved we had the ability at least.
August has been a horrible month as everyone has been on holiday, it's impacted the Thursday game and has made it impossible to get a 2nd 2G match together. We have been approached by Footy Addicts to provide opposition for some of their league teams, so I'm trying to push the guys to take part.
It's not proved without challenges, players have been moaning about days, times, game flavour etc, and it's got to the point now where I have to be quite clear, that i'm no wizard. I can't magic the perfect game for everyone from thin air......there needs to be some give and take.
Jumbo, finally broke down and said, let's just do it.
I was like "Do what?"
"Join a league!".
I was shocked, Jumbo seemed the most reluctant at joining a league, but he had put his cards on the table and he wanted in.
So we've done some research, put some feelers out to some of our better players, and it's all systems go! We're looking at joining the Powerleague@Shepherd's Bush Monday Night 5-a-side league, pencilling in January 2022, as a momentous date in FC7's history.
We think we can do this. We have loads of work to do, both on and off the pitch......and we need to guarantee 5 players a week for 2-3 months......MINIMUM.........I'm sure it's going to a stressful period.
BUT, it will also be another watershed moment at FC7 and one which will 110% bring a lot of enjoyment to the squad. We also want to re-iterate that our first V team is open to every at FC7, prove yourself during the Thursday game and make yourself available with commitment and you'll be signed up. No one is excluded!
