We’ve already spoken of our desire at FC7 to promote the Women’s game. In this day in age, the truth, is that we shouldn’t still have to. In the last few years, the game has grown exponentially within the women’s domain, but there is still so much do in terms of exposure, media coverage and equal pay opportunities.
We don’t shirk from our responsibilities at the club, and we ourselves have had a lot of female interest in our setup. For those starting out or just looking for some inspiration, here’s a few blogs focussing on the Women’s game.
We are keen to not just promote the game, but to give you all a woman’s perspective too, so keep out an eye for more interviews from our female members of FC7.
THIS FAN GIRL - http://www.thisfangirl.com/
I stumbled upon this blog by accident one day. It’s part blog/part Instagram/part digital community, the photo shoots are high quality (maybe we should seek some advice!), the articles informative but above all it’s a digital meeting place for women to drop by. They have regular screening events like meeting up for World Cup games, so if you have been part of our journey so far, you may have the kit and even played your first game. Then “This Fan Girl” is for the more social side of all things football. We have been in contact with them, so hopefully we will be able to advertise some of their events on our blog again, to give as much exposure to the women’s game as possible.
FC AGGREGATE - https://www.instagram.com/_aggregate/
Found this via the “This Fan Girl” blog. They interviewed the 2 sisters (Carolynn and Allison) who setup this women’s friendly 5-a-side team in Liverpool. Fresh off the back of the 2019 Women's World Cup in France, and impressively supported by New Balance, they are one of just a few women’s only grassroots team in Liverpool. Their story is like ours, so I found many parallels with their story. If you’re reading this and based in Liverpool, either join up or take inspiration from them.
Goal Diggers FC - https://www.instagram.com/goaldiggers_fc
Really like this Instagram site. They have been around for a while and it’s a very professional setup. The pride themselves on “Making football more available & accessible to all women & non-binary people, regardless of ability”. So they share one of FC7’s key goals. They generally play at Clapham Common in a Sunday league flavour, they have plenty of action pics and videos as well as some brilliant art posters. They also host https://www.instagram.com/MOZF_/ (Murder on Zidane Floor; love it!) social gathering, so again covering all angles when it comes to footballing life.
Women’s Football Supporters - https://womensfootballsupporters.com/
Another newcomer to the scene, setup in May 2019 in the run to the World Cup, they support not just women supporters but teams from grassroots to a professional level. They have plenty on offer to suit all tastes, from a Twitter handle (https://twitter.com/womensfootbal15), weekly podcasts (https://womensfootballsupporters.com/our-podcast-1) and a blog.
They release a magazine for £2 and have interviews with players from all levels of the game. They are a wealth of resources too, so a must, if you’re planning to setup your own women’s team.
Their blog in particular, is a good read and has a really great mix of articles from personal stories, topical footballing debate and a focus on younger players just starting out their journeys.
A top site, end of!
FC ROMANCE - https://www.instagram.com/romance.fc/
Another top instagram site, for another top womens footy team. Their kit alone is enough to drop by their site. Tidy little number. Love the pics as well, we really need to find ourselves a photographer like the architects on all the previewed sites. It offers a good insight into the game in general, it screenshots, the life, happiness, hard work and all the ups and downs that come with the sport.
We’ll be looking to expand upon the above over time, but as a starter, there’s plenty of material to get stuck into. Use these sites as a starting point, inspiration and on a social level. They understand like us at FC se7en, that football isn’t just about having a kickaround.
It’s about the social scene, doing more for society and game, so don’t shy away, get stuck in like a crunching tackle from Wendie Renard, and before long you’ll be celebrating your first goal, sipping a cup of tea a la Alex Morgan.
We’ve got a feature coming up on Megan Rapinoe, soon. As a club we aspire to be more, and Megan as a player is more too. A role model, an ambassador and a champion for football and any minorities within the game.
So keep an eye out for that!
