Sad news and the Lighting of the touchpaper - Part 1

We’ve all been there before.

Let’s have a game of footy!

Within 5 minutes, you have a 100 people (some of whom you don't even know or like) signed up and ready to go.

But then it starts…..

- Sorry, I just realised I’m washing my hair

- My girlfriend is taking me out for dinner

- I thought you meant Tuesday not Thursday

Finally, there are the plain rude ones who simply don’t bother coming back to you. It’s more about them than you darling.

Sure enough, The 100 turns to the Magnificent 7 and before long that’s whittled down to just you and your mate Jumbo.

SIDENOTE: Aaah Jumbo, the ever reliable troll. Including that day, he infamously declared; “Pele? A legend? All he could do was a few keepy uppies and he played back in the days when only 5 people played football”. We’ll hear more about him in due course. Jumbo not Pele....

So, we’ve ended up with 2 players…….and we call it a day, watch Emmerdale and fall asleep with ways of torturing those lameouts who let you down.

Cue the end of the week, when all the hair washers, eat outs and rude people suddenly find their voices and verbally sign themselves up for football...........again.

Ground Hog Day anyone?

This continued for a quite a few months, until tragedy occurred.

One of our colleagues, a massive Italian soccer fan and player. Religiously fervent in his attempts at chasing me up to setup a game. He was like a Knight Templar, in his relentlessness.

Everyday, no fail, 11am, in collaboration with his espresso ritual, would he amble over.

Nearly every single time, he’d lull me into a false sense of security by walking pass me and striking up a mundane conversation with some one else in the kitchen.

But then he would interrupt said random, and launch his attack on me.

"Hey, when we playing, now, tomorrow, Tuesday? This Thursday? Sort it out? Let's play, let's play. LET'S PLAYYYYY".

My responses and promises were half hearted……..I regret that now.

He fell ill, within days he had suddenly passed away.

His family asked us to celebrate his life……….so we all sat down and thought about how we could, while trying to digest the tragically sad news……..to be cont'd
